Demographic change and its economic and social consequences
The age structure of Slovenia’s population is changing, as is the case in the majority of developed countries. The key feature of the changes is a contraction in the share of the working age population and an increase in the number of elderly people.
According to the demographic projections from EUROPOP2013, the process of population ageing, which is already ongoing, will be more intense in Slovenia than other EU countries. The projections are conditional on the realisation of the key assumptions (change in the number of births, deaths and net migration), but all demographic indicators show the ageing of the population is inevitable. The consequences of these trends will particularly affect the following: (i) the labour market; (ii) education; (iii) public expenditure; and (iv) housing, spatial planning and regional policy.
